MAY - JUNE 2017  - THE ROTARY CLUB OF POINT FORTIN AND SEVEN SEAS WATER TEAM UP                                   FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ WATER AND SANITATION HYGIENE                                                       PROGRAMME (WASH)

The Rotary Club of Point Fortin, partnered with Seven Seas Water, teamed up to teach students of three primary schools water conservation, hygiene and sanitation tips during the week of 29th May 2017 to 2nd June 2017. The WASH in Schools Target Challenge is a program created by Rotary International to develop water and sanitation hygiene (WASH) education. Students of the Guapo Government Primary School, Point Fortin Roman Catholic School and Point Fortin Anglican School learnt proper hygienic practices, how water is collected and treated and responsible water usage. There were also practical demonstrations of testing the pH level of water and games to engage the students.

WASH in schools empowers children and youths to be agents of change. As children share new hygiene practices and water conservation tips with their siblings, parents, and other family members, these people begin to adopt the healthy behaviours in their homes. As they do, the whole community becomes healthier.

President of the Rotary Club of Point Fortin, Tessa Solomon and Past President Carlton Semper approached Seven Seas Water, through Plant Manager Kennedy Lord, who was very supportive of the initiative and through the efforts of team members Gina Ayuen, Justan Mendez, Vijay Singh and Lauren Thomas, the programme was successful as students were interactive and had ready answers to all quiz questions posed.

JANUARY 2017 - HEALTH FAIR

The Rotary Club of Point Fortin held its Health Fair on Sunday 22nd January 2017 with the aim to helping improve the quality of life of citizens in the Borough. Blood glucose and blood pressure checks were provided free of charge to the public, together with free health brochures and one on one consultations with three on-site nurses and Doctor Dhanraj who generously shared his expertise with members of the public. They all helped the forty five participants get an overview of the current status of their health and what measures can be taken to correct present health concerns as well as prevent future problems.

President Tessa Solomon, together with Treasurer Carlton Semper and Secretary Patsy Ransome, noted that participants were very enthusiastic about the event and shared ideas about having a even larger Health Fair that would be accessible to the public for several days so that more persons could have access to the medical services provided. She revealed that there are indeed plans to implement such a medical outreach programme in Point Fortin and its environs later this year.
SEPTEMBER 2016 - JOINT SCHOOL BAG PROJECT

On September 2nd 2016, The Rotary Club of Point Fortin teamed up with the Rotary Club of San Fernando-South and the Office of the Member of Parliament for La Brea to distribute school bags and assorted school supplies to disadvantages students in the La Brea constituency. It was acknowledged that quite a number of students could not afford basic school supplies to ensure that they have a productive academic year and this challenge was accepted and met by all the parties involved. President Tessa Solomon of the Rotary Club of Point Fortin met with Secretary Candace Lalla and Rotarians Mitra Sieunarine and Brian Ramatally of the Rotary Club of San Fernando-South, as well as MP Nicole Ollivere to make this initiative a success.

Please note that due to privacy concerns, images of students receiving school bags and supplies will not be posted.
JULY 2016 - FREE DENTAL PROGRAMME

The Naomi Chin Kit Memorial Kindergarten, The Point Fortin Borough Corporation and The Rotary Club of Point Fortin held a four (4) day Free Dental Clinic in Point Fortin from Monday 25th July 2016 to Thursday 28th July 2016. Dentists and volunteers from The University of Pediatric Dentistry, Buffalo State College Social Work Department and the University of Buffalo Dental School in the United States all successfully collaborated to offer the young children of Point Fortin free dental screening, dental check-ups and cleaning and information and education on how to practice the best dental care.

Key stakeholders in this partnership include Dr. Dian Chin Kit-Wells and Ms. Averill Houldeer-Simon of the Naomi Chin Kit Memorial Kindergarten, His Worship, Mr Clyde Paul, the Mayor of Point Fortin, Ms. Janelle St. Hilaire, the Deputy Mayor, Councillor for New Lands/Mahaica and Public Relations Director of the Rotary Club of Point Fortin and Ms. Tessa Solomon, President of the Rotary Club of Point Fortin.

Over 400 patients participated in the clinic and benefitted from the volunteers’ dental services. The dental team were warm and amiable as they greeted and carefully explained each service to young children before they worked with them. Children’s songs and a bouncy castle served to entertain the kids as they waited their turn. In addition to having the programme focussed on the dental care of young children, dentists accommodated adults as well on all days of the clinic.

The successful clinic received many positive responses from participants who requested that the clinic be extended or available on a more regular basis to the community of Point Fortin. The dental team who volunteered their time and services indicated that they would like to return and contribute their services once more, as well as have the opportunity to experience the warm hospitality and culture they were treated to on their stay in the Borough.

Handing Over Ceremony 2016

THE ROTARY CLUB OF POINT FORTIN CELEBRATES ITS 2016 HANDOVER CEREMONY

The Rotary Club of Point Fortin held its Annual Handover Ceremony on Saturday 9th July 2016 at the Auditorium of the Point Fortin Borough Corporation. The evening saw the installation of the new President and Board of Directors and a valuable contribution on “Sustainable Development in the South West Peninsula” from Honorary Rotarian Mr. Gordon Deane, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Atlantic who was the feature speaker.

Rotary Clubs, under the headquarters of Rotary International, are well known for their commitment to helping to improve the lives of citizens in and around their community, living by their “Service Above Self” motto.
Before handing over, Past President Kenneth Niles reviewed the outreach activities conducted by the club over the Rotary Year 2015-2016 which included youth development initiatives such as  funding the Cub Scouts and the Red Cross Society, the formation of a chess club and the chartering of the very first Interact Club at the Holy Name Secondary School in Point Fortin. Following the ceremonious handover of the Club’s mantle of leadership, inducted President Tessa outlined major projects for the 2016-2017 year under this year’s theme “Rotary Serving Humanity’” which will include an adult literacy programme, a conflict resolution workshop for secondary schools, sanitation and environmental awareness through a recycling programme for primary schools, as well as planned fundraisers and a Rotary Centennial Awareness programme.

Feature Speaker Gordon Deane referenced the heavy investment of Atlantic in the long term development of communities from La Brea to Icacos in a passionate speech that focused around the evolution of sustainable development in the south west peninsula. He emphasized the need for organizations like the Rotary Club of Point Fortin to take action toward sustainable development and seize new opportunities to encourage and foster socioeconomic growth. “The time has come for us to stop talking…we need to take action, one step at a time…one foot in front the other…inaction is the greatest of all sins in situations that cry out for action,” said Deane.
